Woodford Road Closures

Dear All

Northamptonshire Highways are requiring to carry out carriageway patching works on the above roads between the 30mph speed limit signs. To undertake these works safely will require that the road is closed for one day on the 17th October between 09.15 and 15.00.

The plan showing the closure and diversion can be viewed here https://roadworks.org?tm=85116 and if you require more information about the works please contact Rob Simpson on 01604 883400.

Do We Need All Our Streetlights?

The Parish Council is considering changing the streetlights from the current sodium and mercury units to low energy LED’s.  A rural community such as Great Addington is not expected to illuminate every square metre of pavement, but when walking in the village pedestrians should, at all times, be able to see a well lit area ahead of them as a guide. A consultant has advised that with this criteria in mind six of our existing lights could be redundant. They propose that the six should be removed entirely and not replaced. The six lights are located at ……

No.1 Outside Pearl Cottage, Lower Street
No. 3 Opposite Nene View, Lower Street
No. 8 Outside 6, Manor Close
No. 14 Opposite Carler's Farm, Main Street
No. 21 Outside The Cairns, Cranford Road
No. 24 Corner of Rushwell Close / Cranford Road.

Please let the Parish Council know if you have any strong views on this proposal.

By not replacing these lights the total cost of the project would be reduced by £4000 from approximately £18,000 to £14,000 and the future bill for electricity supply would be reduced by £100 per year.

The Council needs to take action because

  1. The current streetlamps use mercury and sodium. Two harmful substances that will be phased out due to problems with their safe disposal. Additionally, replacing them with low energy LED’s  gives a better light quality AND saves money in the long term. The majority of towns and villages in Northamptonshire whose streetlights are operated by The County Council have already changed to LED’s. You will have seen them (along the road from Crow Hill ?) and we hope you will have seen the advantages.
  2. Some of our streetlights are mounted on concrete columns with steel top sections and some are on aluminium posts. We are advised that these columns do not meet current safety standards and need to be replaced.

Reducing carbon footprint

LED street lights use 40-80% less electricity and have at least 5 times the life expectancy compared to regular High Pressure Sodium fixtures.

LED street lamps are very directional and the light output is much more evenly distributed. The light emitted from the LED lamp is directed downwards, spread throughout the entire area it covers.

LED street lights last much longer than conventional lamps (3 to 8 times longer). This results in less expense in replacing the lights themselves and also the labour to replace the lamp is needed less often.

Darksky friendly

Because the light is carefully distributed exactly where it is meant to go there is little light wasted by illuminating the night sky. This also dramatically reduces light pollution, which affects the mood of human beings, navigation in birds and insects, mating behavior in animals and flowering in plants.

Natural light spectrum

LED street lamps render more natural light than the yellow of sodium lamps or green of fluorescent streetlights so displaying the natural colors of illuminated objects.

East Northamptonshire Council Residents’ Survey for 2016

East Northamptonshire Council invites you to participate in its Residents’ Survey for 2016.  We would be grateful if you could take about 10 minutes to give us your views on various aspects of the council’s work and provide information which will help future projects.

The Survey can be accessed directly here or will be available on the council’s website at www.east-northamptonshire.gov.uk/survey.

Please encourage friends, family and other residents to participate, too.  We would like to obtain the views of as many residents as possible.  Obviously, electronic completion of the survey is the most cost effective method, but, if needed, a paper version of the survey can be obtained from the Corporate Support team on 01832 742203.

The survey will remain open until the 19th August 2016.

Many thanks, in anticipation.

Volunteers get their equipment ready for the 2016 Village Springclean

Litter pickers collect their equipment.

The Council thank all those who gave their time on Wednesday to tidy the village. We had the highest ever turnout for this annual springclean. Twenty five volunteers aged 7 to 70+ collected 20 bags of litter from footways, verges and hedgerows. Thank you to Holly for allowing us to use the Hare & Hounds car park and for the buffet afterwards. Thank you to Helen for organising the equipment.

Village Spring Clean

The Parish Council hold a Spring Clean event in April each year to rid the verges, hedgerows and footways within the village of litter. This year we are linking with a national initiative ‘Clean for the Queen’

Operation Spring Clean 2016 will be based at The Hare and Hounds and there will be a buffet for the volunteers afterwards. All essential equipment will be provided.

Please give an hour of your time for your village.
Come along to The Hare and Hounds carpark at 6:00 pm. on Wednesday 13th April 2016 to offer your support for this worthwhile event.

Saints Alive – Great Addington Parish Council April 2016 Update

Community Speed Watch

The Council is once again asking for volunteers to be trained to help with Community Speed Watch (CSW). As reported in previous issues, CSW uses the combined efforts of the Safer Community Teams, Parish Councils, the County Council and Northamptonshire ACRE (Action with Communities in Rural England). Volunteers are trained to use hand held speed cameras to monitor the speed of traffic through their village and the information obtained is passed on to the Police. Letters are then sent to the owners of the speeding vehicles, warning that repeat offenders could face prosecution and three CSW detections will lead to a visit by Northamptonshire Traffic Police. Great Addington has use of the speed device and associated equipment on alternative three weeks from Saturday 6th August to Saturday 17th September 2016 and will be paired with Burton Latimer. Training sessions for new volunteers will be held at Caroline Chisolm School Wooldale Road, Northampton NN4 6TP on Saturday mornings on 7th May, 18th June and 30th July 2016 9.00 am to noon. The Council would like to thank everyone for their support of CSW, especially the volunteers.

‘Clean for the Queen’ – Operation Spring Clean 2016

As reported last month, the Council is once again asking for help with Operation Spring Clean and this year it will be held on Wednesday 13th April 2016 from 6:00 pm. to 7:30 pm. The theme will be ‘Clean for the Queen’ which is a national project being organised by a coalition of anti-litter campaign groups, such as Keep Britain Tidy, to prepare for the Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday later this year. The project website says “When [Queen Elizabeth] came to the throne litter was not the problem that it is today. Food packaging, plastic bottles, takeaway meals and cigarette butts have all contributed to a growing menace that affects our wildlife, streets, countryside and sense of pride. What better way could we show our gratitude to Her Majesty than to clean up our country?”

‘Clean for the Queen’ – Operation Spring Clean 2016 will be based at The Hare and Hounds and there will be a buffet for the volunteers afterwards. All essential equipment will be provided and so please come along to The Hare and Hounds carpark at 6:00 pm. on Wednesday 13th April 2016 to offer your support for this worthwhile event.

Annual Parish Meeting (of electors)

As reported last month, the Annual Parish Meeting (of electors) will be held in the Memorial Hall, Great Addington on Wednesday 18th May 2016 at 7:30 pm. This is different from the monthly meetings because electors in the Parish have the opportunity to ask questions and make comments throughout the evening. Please come along and let your Council know what you want for Great Addington. If you would like more information about the Annual Parish Meeting and/or to send suggestions for discussion, please contact the Clerk.

Date of the next meeting

The next meeting of the Council will be held in the Memorial Hall, Great Addington on Wednesday 20th April 2016 at 7:45 pm. and the agenda will be available (on the website and the notice board) three clear days before this date. Please note that members of the public have the right to attend any meeting of the Council.
